How to Experience
YOU BE MY ALLY
The University of Chicago ‘s commission of Jenny Holzer’s YOU BE MY ALLY will premiere on the UChicago campus and worldwide through a web-based augmented reality (AR) app for a limited public run October 5–Dec 4, 2020.
YOU BE MY ALLY utilizes excerpts of historically significant readings from UChicago’s Core Curriculum making use of an AR app to virtually superimpose and animate the texts over the facades of significant UChicago buildings, as well as onto an app user’s surroundings anywhere in the world. Text selections from the Core will also be featured on electronic displays of LED trucks driving around Chicago on select dates in October 2020.
AR experiences for YOU BE MY ALLY will be hosted on the web platform 8th Wall and can be activated by users at specific points marked on the ground outside buildings on the UChicago campus. Off campus, viewers can experience the work by accessing youbemyally.uchicago.edu. Holzer’s projects have long been inextricably linked to the built environment of their settings. YOU BE MY ALLY will invite viewers to interact with their surroundings and forge new cultural and architectural meanings from the juxtapositions of historic texts and lived urban environments.
